Word of the Day: 3Vs (volume, variety and velocity)

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:01 PM PDT

Word of the Day WhatIs.com
Daily updates on the latest technology terms | October 18, 2018
3Vs (volume, variety and velocity)

3Vs (volume, variety and velocity) are three defining properties or dimensions of big data. Volume refers to the amount of data, variety refers to the number of types of data and velocity refers to the speed of data processing. According to the 3Vs model, the challenges of big data management result from the expansion of all three properties, rather than just the volume alone -- the sheer amount of data to be managed.

Gartner analyst Doug Laney introduced the 3Vs concept in a 2001 MetaGroup research publication, 3D data management: Controlling data volume, variety and velocity. More recently, additional Vs have been proposed for addition to the model, including variability -- the increase in the range of values typical of a large data set -- and value, which addresses the need for valuation of enterprise data.

The infographic below (reproduced with permission from Diya Soubra's post, The 3Vs that define Big Data, on Data Science Central) illustrates the increasing expansion of the 3Vs.

Quote of the Day

"Industry experts typically classify big data using the 3Vs model: volume, variety and velocity. This categorization holds up whether your business handles enterprise applications with large data sets or whether it's a consumer-facing startup with tens of thousands of users for your social app." - Twain Taylor

3 ways to prep microservices applications for big data
Big data management is a complex task, especially with distributed microservices applications. But by thinking carefully about database structuring and management, application management teams can get a handle on that task.

Beat the challenges of predictive analytics in big data systems
Doing predictive analytics in big data environments creates a unique set of challenges, but also presents opportunities to those who are ready to handle them.

Big data trends: What enterprise architects need to prepare for
Progress Software's Jesse Davis says now that the notorious 3Vs have been tended to, big data trends include moving toward inquiry, insight and innovation.

Big data analytics: New patterns emerge for security
Will big data and predictive analytics really make security better? With data scientists in short supply, solution providers work on big data analytics tools for enterprise users.

Cloud-based applications must deal with quirks of big data
Developers need to add veracity to volume, velocity and variety (the 3Vs of big data) when creating cloud-based applications. All four factors are crucial for business agility.

Word of the Day: COPE

Posted: 17 Oct 2018 02:01 PM PDT

Word of the Day WhatIs.com
Daily updates on the latest technology terms | October 17, 2018
COPE

COPE (corporate-owned, personally-enabled) is a business model in which an organization provides its employees with mobile computing devices and allows the employees to use them as if they were personally-owned notebook computers, tablets or smartphones.

Because a corporation can often get IT products at wholesale or bulk prices, the COPE business model can be more cost-effective for both the organization and the employee. Although the business technically owns the devices and is responsible for monthly usage costs, employees are free to use them off the job.

The COPE model can facilitate an organization's mobile device management and mobile application management initiatives and provide the organization with greater power to protect the organization's data both technically and legally. Because the company owns the line of service, it also has the power to select which vendors to work with and which device models (and data plans) will be provided. Both the BYOD and COPE models reflect an ongoing trend towards more fluid boundaries between personal and work-related use of technologies.

The COPE approach can be contrasted with both the BYOD (bring your own device) model, in which employees purchase their own mobile devices and use them for work too and the traditional IT provisioning model, in which employees are assigned computing devices that remain permanently located in the workplace.

Quote of the Day

"Despite the challenges associated with the COPE model, some organizations might greatly benefit from the control it returns to their IT departments, especially when it comes to protecting sensitive data." - Robert Sheldon

As a word nerd, I appreciated this immensely. Not since Brian and Karl's memorable "How English Sounds to Non-English Speakers" have we been graced with an experiment so linguistically out of the box. It's not just the concept that feels unique, special and never-before-explored; his execution is smart. He builds a clever writing structure into a lesson on vowel sounds, and he composed the entire musical score himself. Self-sufficiency pays off!

View in 2: Listicles

Listicles are the perfect blend of a list and an article, and the good ones include creative titles and funny visuals. Why do we love this snackable format so much? It's because of cognitive theory. We all process information better when it's spatially organized, so numbered lists and punchy, short descriptions are the perfect way to break through all of the clutter online. As a result, more and more YouTube creators and brands are using listicles to attract and delight viewers.

What does this mean for marketers?
When used properly, listicles are a powerful marketing tool that can establish your brand as a thought leader. For example, Allure broke down the past century in "100 Years of Acne Treatments." To succeed with listicles, you have to stand out from the crowd with a title that grabs attention. Then, sum up your information in bite-sized chunks. And finally, show off your personality. Put your own spin on content like Friskies did when they teamed up with BuzzFeed to share life lessons from cats. Viewers won't forget something like that!

One last thing: Virtual Test Drives

One last thing: Virtual Test Drives

Think visiting the dealership is the only way to see if a car is right for you? Think again! Online video makes it easy for shoppers to get familiar with vehicles long before they step foot in a dealership. The number of "test drive" videos uploaded to YouTube has grown 120% over the past two years (Google Data, US, July 2015-June 2017). Thanks to these videos, you can virtually get behind the wheel of a Cadillac Escalade, check out third-row seating in a Toyota Highlander, and experience 340 horsepower in the Audi A8.

What does this mean for marketers?
Whereas auto brands used to rely on several types of media, like TV to drive awareness and traditional auto websites to generate leads, now that can all be done in one place. Online video enables marketers to drive awareness of new cars and features and allow shoppers to compare and contrast their options. These videos also can bring on leads, since over 60% of auto shoppers reported visiting a dealership or dealer website after watching a video of a vehicle they were considering.

Community News: Project Web PHP Upgrade

Starting Monday, Oct 15, 2018, we are making PHP 7.1 available in our project web hosting as a part of the newer https sourceforge.io hosting option. Those remaining on the older http sourceforge.net hosting will continue to utilize PHP 5.4. For those who are not familiar with the sourceforge.io project web hosting, keep in mind that any current links to your project web pages will continue to be valid since the old paths will redirect to the new. However, you may need to do some domain tweaking in your files to handle the difference (and to avoid superfluous redirections) and to make some http-to-https protocol tweaks for linked materials to avoid warnings about insecure files.

We chose the 7.1 release as our first version of PHP 7 because it offers more backward compatibility features than going straight to 7.2 or 7.3. In the future we will be upgrading PHP to newer versions of 7.x, so users are encouraged to check for compatibility warnings and fix them to future-proof their apps.

For the transition we have created a list of projects that are already on the sourceforge.io hosting but aren't yet ready for PHP 7 so that we can temporarily exclude them from the upgrade while reaching out to the project admins to let them know about the issue. We also provide a way for admins to test their website under PHP 7 before making the switch. Visit our Project Web Services documentation page to learn more.

"Staff Choice" Project of the Month

For our October "Staff Pick" Project of the Month, we selected Universal Media Server ,a DLNA-compliant UPnP Media Server that streams many media formats with minimal configuration. Universal Media Server was previously elected "Community Choice" Project of the Month in March 2014 where project founder and lead developer Klaus Townsend spoke about the project's developments and direction. Recently we caught up with Klaus to find out how the project has been doing since then.

Check out the full interview with the developers on our blog here.
