According to the GSMA’s 2021 Mobile Industry Impact Report on Sustainability, the mobile industry is making progress when it comes to tracking and disclosing climate data and setting goals for reducing emissions. At the end of 2020, 69% of operators by connections and 80% of operators by revenue disclosed their climate impacts.
This recent survey of mobile operators and tower companies uncovers the industry’s current sustainability practices, as well as their concerns for future sustainability. In addition, it delves into the cell site energy sources and costs and looks at how companies are currently tracking and measuring their emissions and energy usage.
Key findings include:
Over 70% of respondents said they were either very familiar or somewhat familiar with their company’s net-zero goals
Nearly one-third of respondents said that they use a combination of software and manual checks to monitor their energy sources
Over 60% of respondents said that their cell sites use a variety of energy sources including electricity, batteries and solar power.
